Growing Social at Larkin Valley Farm is a therapeutic, educational program that supports those with social learning challenges (including high functioning Autism, Aspergerʼs Syndrome, ADHD, ADD, NVLD, and those without a formal diagnosis but who struggle socially) in a safe and engaging outdoor environment.
Gardening, cooking, and other related group activities are used as vehicles to teach and practice social learning concepts and develop executive functioning/organizational skills. In small groups carefully organized by age and skill level, students build self-esteem, experience direct success, and increase their confidence in the social world. For older students, this engaging, multi-modality program is a fantastic, hands-on way to cutivate independent living skills and social-vocational learning.
There are many places (mainly in the Bay Area) offering Social Skills Groups. Please see the SPIN website for more information.http://www.spinsc.org
YouthSERVE is dedicated to connecting youth, ages 11-17, with rewarding community service projects across the Santa Cruz County. Under the direction of adult volunteer leaders, YouthSERVE volunteers contribute their talents to making positive change in our community.
Monterey Bay Aquarium Apprentice Program
One of our parents recommended this program. It's a drive, but a real confidence builder.
Get Support or Be a Peer Leader. CalMHSA’s Stigma and Discrimination Reduction campaign targeting 14-24 year old Californians. This campaign links youth and young adults to tools, resources and a series of interactive forums at ReachOutHere.com (English-language forums) and BuscaApoyo.org (Spanish-language forums). While mobilizing youth to change social norms, the ReachOut Forums provide visitors with a safe space to discuss a range of social and mental health-related issues with trained peer leaders and encourage both support seeking and support giving around mental health challenges.
